Dental Care for an Epileptic Child

During Epileptic Seizures the child the following dental mishaps can happen-

·     Biting of Cheek

·     Biting of Tongue

·     Chipped or Cracked tooth

·     Displacement of tooth from socket

·     Trauma Induced TMJ dislocation

·     Fractured Jaw

The regular anti-epileptic medications that are prescribed for example Carbamazepine causes side effects like Xerostomia commonly known as dry mouth which is the decrease in the salivary flow rate.

The decrease in rate of salivary flow reduces the efficacy of the anti-bacterial action of the saliva. The reduction of the salivary flow also decreases the pH levels of the mouth which not only favour the cavity causing bacteria but also creates an acidic environment which causes erosion of the enamel.

The medications also impact the absorption which is very important for the development or health teeth and bones.

Thrombocytopenia which is a decrease in the platelet count of the blood is also a side effect caused by anti-epileptic drugs. This is the reason behind the excessive bleeding and delayed healing in epileptic patients.

To treat epileptic children conscious sedation and general anesthesia are good options so that the dentist can safely and effectively provide dental care.

For less elaborate procedures where only preventive and prophylactic treatments the pediatric dentists use the Tell Show Do technique which reassures the child and makes him/ her more compliant.

To minimize the seizures due to stress and anxiety, appointments should be scheduled during a time of the day seizure activity is less likely to occur.

At Vasupujya Pediatric Dental Hospital we have the option of Conscious Sedation on all our dental chairs.

Our team at Vasupujya Pediatric Dental Hospital is well trained in providing dental care for children with special health care needs.
