Asthmatic children are more prone to develop cavities in their teeth. An increase of the severity of bronchial asthma increases the risk of dental caries.
The anti-asthmatic medication plays a major role in dental caries progression because of-
· Added sugar in the medication
· Reduced salivary flow caused as aside effect of the anti-asthmatic drugs
Added sugar in the Anti-Ashthmatic Medicines
Most of the inhalers contain added sugar so that the patient can taste the drug and confirm that it has been delivered and also to mask the unpleasant taste of the drug especially for children. Although the most commonly used sugar is lactose is one of the least cariogenic (cavity causing) sugars, the frequent inhalation and low salivary flow increase the risk of developing caries.
Liquid oral medication containing sugar taken for a long term can increase the risk of developing cavities in the tooth.
Decreased Salivary Flow
The decrease in the salivary flow is a side effect of the beta-2 agonist anti-histamtic drugs which are prescribed. The decrease in rate of salivary flow reduces the efficacy of the anti-bacterial action of the saliva. The reduction of the salivary flow also decreases the pH levels of the mouth which not only favour the cavity causing bacteria but also creates an acidic environment which causes erosion of the enamel.
Other Factors
Children suffering from asthma unfortunately live a life with a lot of restrictions, they can’t play sports the way other children can, also they have to miss school days due to their condition. The family may also try to compensate and pamper them by frequently treating them with chocolates and candies.
